The Bible verse about serpents and poisons not harming people (which is found in later but not the earliest manuscripts) I believe would refer primarily to accidental exposure to these things, not putting God to the test by intentionally exposing yourself to these poisons. It's only by the grace of God that any of them are alive today. They got their theological application of this passage basically entirely wrong; we are not called to drink poison or handle snakes.
